Who is behind the Hilo Visitor?

We are Lisa and James Eller. We live in Hilo and we love our community. Hilo is full of people who are passionate about culture, food, art and ‘aina. Here, set against a lush landscape and scenic bay, visitors can find many small, local businesses offering locally grown food and products. These are some of the things that make Hilo a truly local Hawai‘i town.

Lisa is a long-time writer and journalist who has written for Ka Wai Ola News, West Hawai‘i Today, the Montrose Daily Press and others. She recently published a book called Whose Future? Community Planning in West Maui. She also works with nonprofit leaders to create impactful reports and publications.

James is a natural resource manager with a background in agriculture and conservation. He has been working with farmers and ranchers for 20+ years in Hawaii and across the Western U.S.

Our intention is to feature stories that:

✔ Support local, sustainable agriculture - farms and food products

✔ Direct visitors to locally owned and operated businesses

✔ Helps visitors be mindful and respectful of Hilo’s environment and culture
